피에르 부르디외와 장클로드 패스롱은 <문화복제와 사회복제>에서 1960년대 프랑스 교육 시스템 내에서 아동의 학업 성취도와 성적 간의 차이를 개념적으로 설명하기 위해 문화자본을 제시했다..
부르디외는 그의 에세이 <자본의 형태>와 그의 책 <국가 귀족: 권력 분야의 엘리트 학교>에서 이 개념을 더욱 발전시켰다.
에세이에서 부르디외는 문화적 자본을 두 가지 다른 자본 범주로 분류한다. 첫째는 돈, 자산, 재산을 포함한 경제적 자원을 대표하는 경제자본이고 둘째는 상호간의 제도화된 관계의 지속적 네트워크 소유와 관련된 실재적이고 잠재적인 자원과 인식을 대표하는 사회자본이다.

In the field of sociology, cultural capital comprises the social assets of a person (education, intellect, style of speech, style of dress, etc.) that promote social mobility in a stratified society. Cultural capital functions as a social relation within an economy of practices (i.e. system of exchange), and includes the accumulated cultural knowledge that confers social status and power; thus cultural capital comprises the material and symbolic goods, without distinction, that society considers rare and worth seeking.[4] There are three types of cultural capital: (i) embodied capital, (ii) objectified capital, and (iii) institutionalised capital.
Pierre Bourdieu and Jean-Claude Passeron coined and defined the term cultural capital in the essay "Cultural Reproduction and Social Reproduction" (1977). Bourdieu then developed the concept in the essay "The Forms of Capital" (1985) and in the book The State Nobility: Élite Schools in the Field of Power (1996) to explain that the education (knowledge and intellectual skills) of a person provides social mobility in achieving a higher social status in society.

사회적 자본은 대인관계와 공유된 정체성, 규범, 이해, 가치와 더불어 신뢰, 협력, 상호작용을 통해 사회 집단에 효과적인 기능을 하는 것이다. 사회적 자본은 유형적인 자본(공공 공간, 사유재산 등)과 무형적인 자본(사람, 인적 자본 등), 그리고 그 관계들이 자원과 더 큰 집단에 얼마나 영향을 미치는지 측정하는 것이다. 일반적으로 공동의 목적을 위해 공공재를 생산하는 자본의 형태로 본다. 사회적 자본은 다양한 집단의 향상된 성과, 기업가적 기업의 성장, 우수한 경영 성과, 공급망 관계 강화, 전략적 제휴에서 도출된 가치, 지역사회 공동체의 진화 등을 설명하는데 이용되어 왔다.

Social capital is "the networks of relationships among people who live and work in a particular society, enabling that society to function effectively". It involves the effective functioning of social groups through interpersonal relationships, a shared sense of identity, a shared understanding, shared norms, shared values, trust, cooperation, and reciprocity. Social capital is a measure of the value of resources, both tangible (e.g., public spaces, private property) and intangible (e.g., actors, human capital, people), and the impact that these relationships have on the resources involved in each relationship, and on larger groups. It is generally seen as a form of capital that produces public goods for a common purpose.
Social capital has been used to explain the improved performance of diverse groups, the growth of entrepreneurial firms, superior managerial performance, enhanced supply chain relations, the value derived from strategic alliances, and the evolution of communities.
